Zenith
Cronometro Tipo CP-2 'Cairelli'
Why It Matters
Zenith's Cairelli-supplied pilot's chronograph. Roughly 43mm in steel, the Cronometro Tipo CP-2 runs the manual, Martel-based caliber 146 DP and shows a matte black two-register (bi-compax) dial, luminous Arabic numerals and a rotating sixty-minute bezel, with the dial and caseback signed 'A. Cairelli Roma' for the Roman contractor that supplied the watches against Aeronautica Militare Italiana requirements. Military issue is documented only for service-marked examples, whose casebacks carry AMI engraving and an issue number; unmarked stock was later sold commercially, so the model is not captioned as military-issued in general. Production and delivery counts are disputed across sources and are not published here as a fixed number. It is distinct from the Universal Genève-cased CP-2 and the earlier Leonidas CP-1.
