Universal Genève
Compax 'Nina Rindt'
Why It Matters
The white 'panda' Compax collectors call the Nina Rindt. A 36mm steel chronograph on the manual caliber 85, Universal Genève's name for the Valjoux 72, it shows three registers in the Valjoux 72 layout: running seconds, a thirty-minute counter and a twelve-hour counter. The configuration is defined by its white silvered panda dial, a tachymeter bezel, pump pushers and twisted lyre lugs; rare examples carry a pulsation bezel instead. The nickname comes from Nina Rindt, wife of the Formula One driver Jochen Rindt, who was photographed wearing one. The white-panda dial defines the configuration, while the exact reference is established from the caseback and cataloguing: 885103/02 is representative, and late examples appear in 885105 cases, so dial colour alone does not prove the reference.
