Marvel Comics #1
Marvel Comics, 1939
Why It Matters
Marvel Comics #1 brought together the android Human Torch, the Sub-Mariner and other adventure features in 1939. Carl Burgos's artificial, flame-covered man and Bill Everett's undersea character offered contrasting kinds of hero within the same anthology.
The title would later become the publisher's name. Its significance lies in that early mixture of characters and genres, before the interconnected superhero world of the 1960s.
