Longines

Lindbergh Hour Angle, 1931

Why It Matters

A navigation instrument for the wrist. Charles Lindbergh designed this watch with Longines in 1931, extending Captain Weems's second-setting idea, to help aviators read the hour angle of a celestial body at Greenwich and so fix their longitude. The original is a large 47.5mm sterling silver watch on the hand-wound calibre 18.69, with a rotating bezel and a dial marked in degrees, since the earth turns fifteen degrees each hour. This is the 1931 original, not a modern reissue.
