Cartier Tank Normale Gold
Cartier, 1917
Why It Matters
The original Tank. Louis Cartier designed the Tank Normale in 1917, its broad vertical brancards recalling the treads and armor of a First World War tank. The case is an upright rectangle with flat tops and slabbed sides, and the brancards run seamlessly into the strap as structure rather than ornament. Many signatures of the whole Tank line first appeared here: the Roman numeral dial, blued steel hands, the blue cabochon crown, and the railroad minute track. Cartier revisited the form in 2023 through the Privé collection, a modern echo of the 1917 original.
