Cartier
Tank Cintrée, 1921
Why It Matters
The stretched and curved Tank. Launched in 1921 (Sotheby's dates it 1922), the Tank Cintrée takes the rectangular Tank and draws it long and narrow, then curves the case so it follows the wrist. Cartier elongated the Roman numerals and the railroad minute track to match the distorted proportions and scalloped the caseback for comfort. A representative case runs about 23mm wide by 44.7mm long and only 6.7mm thick. Examples were produced across Cartier's Paris, London and New York branches.
