Action Comics #1
DC Comics, 1938
Why It Matters
Action Comics #1 introduced Superman in 1938, in a story by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The debut gives the issue a foundational place in superhero publishing. Its significance rests on that first appearance and on the survival of an early Golden Age comic, not simply on the familiar car-lifting cover.
The issue is an anthology, with Superman appearing alongside other features. Completeness, restoration, condition and a documented pedigree distinguish individual copies; an auctioned example's history does not transfer to every copy of the issue.
