Why the Krabby Patty Secret Formula Worked as a Card

The card sold on eBay on April 29, 2026, at its Buy It Now price of C$15,000, about US$12,436 at the recorded conversion. The listing identified the card as the Krabby Patty Secret Formula Shadowbox 1/1.

The card itself is not random. Topps' checklist identifies KPF-3, The Krabby Patty Secret Formula, as part of the SpongeBob Shadowbox insert line, alongside SpongeBob's Spatula, Mr. Krabs' First Dollar, The Magic Conch Shell, and Squidward's Clarinet.

That is why the card works. The strongest SpongeBob collectibles are not only character cards. They are artifacts from inside the world of the show. The formula is the object Plankton never gets, the thing Mr. Krabs guards, and the myth that makes the Krusty Krab feel like a real place. A shadowbox 1/1 turns that running joke into a physical trophy.

The set design helps explain the result. Topps Chrome SpongeBob is built around refractors, autographs, sketch cards, art inserts, and limited object-based inserts. The Shadowbox SuperFractor parallels give the show's in-world objects the same chase-card logic usually reserved for athletes, rookies, and comic characters.

The figure is small beside the top of sports cards, comics, and video games. That is partly the point. Pop-culture card collecting is still learning which objects matter. In SpongeBob, the formula is one of the few things that already feels canonical before the market gets involved.
